The Batemans Shelf marine bioregion
The Batemans Shelf marine bioregion extends from Shellharbour to Tathra.
The bioregion is characterised by its temperate waters, rocky reefs, sandy beaches, estuaries, and seagrass meadows. The region's temperate climate and nutrient-rich waters make it a hotspot for biodiversity, hosting numerous fish species, invertebrates, and marine mammals.
It serves as a crucial breeding, feeding, and nursery ground for numerous marine species. The presence of habitats such as kelp forests and sponge gardens provides shelter and sustenance for marine organisms, while the estuarine systems contribute to nutrient cycling and water filtration.
Marine protected areas play a crucial role in conserving the unique habitats and species of the Batemans Shelf marine bioregion. Notable sites include the Jervis Bay Marine Park and the Batemans Marine Park where marine sanctuaries have been established to maintain ecological integrity and protect threatened species.
Marine sanctuaries have been established at:
Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve | 3ha | 100% sanctuary
Jervis Bay Marine Park | 21,500ha | 20% sanctuary
Batemans Marine Park | 85,000ha | 19% sanctuary
